Canine Tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough)

Canine Tracheobronchitis is an infection and irritation of the trachea (wind pipe). and large air passages of the lungs. The cause is believed to be a virus and the disease may spread rapidly from one dog to another. Secondary bacterial infections are common. The disease does not affect people.

Although your pet seems to be alert and in good health, you will notice the sudden onset of a harsh deep cough or "choking" noise. The cough may be dry or mucus may be coughed up. Excessive coughing may cause vomiting.

With treatment, recovery is usually complete. Medications may be needed for several weeks. Complete recovery may take four to six weeks.

The following is a list of instructions for you to help speed your pets recovery:

1. Carefully follow the doctors instructions for medicating your pet. An antibiotic and or cough medication may be prescribed.

2. Keep your pets activity very restricted to help prevent coughing.

3.Remove collars as they may put pressure on the wind pipe and cause coughing. A chest harness should be used if your pet is to be leash walked.

4. Use a vaporizer in the room to help prevent drying of the lining of the respiratory tract. Use cold water.

5. Encourage as much fluid consumption as possible. Water is the best drug available to help thin the mucus so that it can be coughed up.

6. Maintain a constant air temperature. Prevent chilling. Keep bathing to a minimum.

7. Notify your vet immediately if the cough becomes worse or persists, if a nasal discharge develops or becomes worse, or if diarrhea or vomiting develop.

8. Make sure you bring in your pet for scheduled re-examination as requested by the doctor.

9. THERE IS AN INTRA-NASAL VACCINE THAT IS AVAILABLE AT YOUR VET CLINIC TO PREVENT THIS DISEASE OR LESSEN IT'S SEVERITY. THIS VACCINE IS REQUIRED BEFORE A DOG CAN BE BOARDED, TRAINED OR GROOMED AT MOST FACILITIES.
